I love writing. Ironically, my cancer journey brought me back to writing.
Despite the clouds brought about by this journey, writing seems to be the sun beneath it, like a blank piece of paper just waiting for the ink or for my fingertips to type the letters from my ever so busy brain. I remember being so excited despite everything that there’s a writing class with CSC. And so I immediately signed-up, and patiently waited when I was put on waitlist. And when I finally was able to attend, this venue where I can just let the words flow out of my head, offered me relief. I craved for silence, but when I started writing again, I realized that the words were just waiting for me to put them on paper. Words that were raw, sometimes comforting, sometimes hurting, but ever so true all the time.
I welcome this space to sit and reflect, to pause and sigh, or sometimes just breathe. This is a space for when sometimes I do not even know what I am going to write, and sometimes the words will just flow. Like the waves of the sea, I follow the words as they come and go, and together with it, the emotions and feelings find release and refuge.
Who knew that the depths of my being would surface between words and sentences and paragraphs. This space that gives me peace and respite from the always busy world. Over the days and the months and the years, I’ve found my strength back, and along with it, my will to keep going and keep writing, without which my mind would maybe have been more chaotic. Like a puzzle, writing seems to make the words make sense of it all, coming out of my fingertips, one letter at a time, slowly revealing what is, what was, and what can be, if I allow myself to be.
CSCLA’s weekly Creative Writing Group takes place every Wednesday over Zoom from 1-3PM.
